Ah, the red months! There are so many occasions to wear red from November through February. Red is a powerful color that excites and energizes. We can all use a little bit of that in our lives and our wardrobes. Whether you favor the warm or cool palettes, there is a red for you.

One of the most important reasons to wear red is in support of women’s heart health. Since our business caters to a majority of female customers, we want to urge our customers to support this cause in any way you can. February 5th is National Wear Red Day. If you can afford a contribution, great! There is a Sawyer Brook Fabrics Group at the AHA site. We hope you’ll be inspired to grab all your red fabrics from your stash or from our store and make outfits for this year or plan ahead for next! We’ve marked all the reds in stock with Wear Red and a link to the AHA site.

All That Glitters…

Brushed Gold and Pewter Spangle Knit

Every holiday season brings with it glitter and glitz. This year’s metallics are toned down to a very wearable brushed gold or pewter. See our Spangle knit in The Bistro or Snow Globe in The Back Room for a quick top or shimmery dress. Sophisticated event? Try Mirror Ball. Looking for a bit of colorful glitz? Try our Back Room Cocktail which featured metallic blue on a black crinkle ground.

If you want to say glitz without the glitter, try using a shiny fabric such as Ornament or Coquette. Colors such as red or gray can offer up a shiny feel just by their hue.

Sewists have so many options to add some shimmer to their wardrobes. Simply take one of you favorite top patterns and color block with glittery fabrics; add shoulder epaulets of glitter to a solid shiny fabric; make neckbands, wristbands or hipster ties with glittery fabrications. So many ideas, so little time! You can do it!

What is a trend? Fads come and go overnight. They are temporary. Trends are a movement in a particular direction. It’s fun to watch trends. If you enjoy fashion, then watching the fashion trends can be a hobby and a nice adjunct to your creative hobbies like sewing or knitting. It doesn’t mean you produce every new style, but following the trends can stimulate your creativity in a direction that will make your garments look current and a la mode. We know that some of you watch the trends carefully and want to replicate ready-to-wear from your sewing room. That’s why we created The Bistro, the lighter side of Sawyer Brook.

This new department in our online store features fabrics that speak to today’s styling trends and are “priced to entice”. Sewing garments for quick turnaround can be fun and easy.

Right now you’ll find retro prints, bold prints and dots…all part of this season’s fashion scene. We’ll be introducing new fabrics regularly and will announce them here on this blog. Ruffles

Add a touch of romance…

Ruffles hit the spotlight in spring 2008 and they are back bigger than ever for spring 2009. Feminine and romantic, this look has made its way into dresses, shirt fronts and even gusseted into coats. Even just touches of ruffle, skirting across a hem or sleeve edge, or a tiny delicate waterfall on a shirt front can add softening to silhouettes. An off-center thin line of small ruffling down a shirt or skirt can add length to your look or adding a long ruffled scarf will do for a nod to this hot fashion look.

We were especially intrigued with drapey jerseys teamed with georgettes to form mixed layers of ruffles… and we have a perfect pair up! The Acai silk georgette and Jussara cotton spandex knit duo.

Riding the Wave of Knits this Summer

Surf’s up for knits this summer. We have been seeing them in dresses for a while, but knits are really hanging 10 for tops in the summer of ‘08. They are out there as the banded jewel necklines in drapey silhouettes, preppy color filled polos, deep scoops, boatnecks, and have been seen in more stripes than a beach umbrella. To put it in surfer terms, Chillax. Whichever works for you, go for it, keep it real and rip your sewing to new heights! Just remember to maintain a low-key vibe when you’re in the lineup.

Knit Picks

Sweaters are taking a twist this season and being shown at RTW as wraps, coats and jackets. With the shawl collar neckline and midi length taking reign as the silhouette of 2007. Pair them up with boots and slim pants or skirts to complete the “right now” look.

Make friends with with your serger again this fall and complete the sweater dressing look with no knitting needles required!

You don’t need a detector to find metals out there in the marketplace this season. You can find their influences everywhere! From weighty chains, grommets and buckles on accessories to the mating of the shiny stuff with fabric in chenilles, brocades, sheers, knits and even laminated onto cottons, the current craze of Europe.

Sporty

From flowing and feminine we switch to everyday sporty. This trend is evident throughout the ready-to-wear collections this spring.

You’ll see lots of zip front hoodies, yoga pants, sneakers and gym bags. The trick is not to wear it all in one outfit! We have lightweight French terry in black, white and Cerulean blue. If you love hoodies, make up several and team them with jeans, shorts or skirts made from stretch denim or khaki. If you like wearing yoga pants, try pairing them with a knit tank in one of the great colors we have in our knit department. Whatever you choose, mix and match colors and textures rather than wearing it head to toe (aka sweatsuit).

First Signs of Spring
